Sam appear in Transformers: Tales of the Fallen #1 from IDW Publishing. Set between the 2007 and 2009 films, Barricade kidnaps Sam in order to drive out Bumblebee and learn where the Shard is AllSpark. Bumblebee saves Sam and fights with Barricade, but Barricade escapes.
In the 2007 Transformers, Sam is a social outcast who unwittingly buys Bumblebee as his first car. Sam is unaware that his car is a Transformer, even though Bumblebee was responsible for helping Sam (a little) regarding Mikaela Banes. The first night, however, Bumblebee leaves the house, leading Sam to follow him in believing that his car had been stolen. Later that night Sam is horrified to discover that his car was turned into a robot. After being saved from the Decepticon Barricade by Bumblebee, Sam learns the full story as he helps the Autobots keep the AllSpark away from the Decepticons, until he uses it to kill Megatron.
Sam asks Ratchet and Ironhide if either of them ever thought of defeating The Fallen with water, since he was always on fire and all. The two Autobots were puzzled as to how they had never considered doing so.
